Mokena, IL — Several Will County schools increased security measures this week after false social media threats caused concerns about a potential school shooting. Some schools opted for e-learning, while others conducted searches as students entered.
Mokena School Superintendent Steve Stein reported an alleged threat against Mokena Junior High to local police. The individual behind the alleged incident is a reportedly a repeat offender, known to law enforcement for making false complaints in the past.
According to Mokena Police, the individual has a documented history of mental health issues. Detectives are working with the State’s Attorney’s office to assess whether criminal charges or mandatory mental health treatment should be pursued.
While no verified threat to schools exists, police are focusing on addressing the root cause of these repeated false threats. Mental health professionals may be involved to ensure the individual receives appropriate care.
Authorities continue to stress the importance of early mental health intervention, both to protect the community and to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. Schools remain cautious but are operating under normal conditions.
