Wilmington, IL – A Wilmington man was arrested Saturday after allegedly attempting to meet a person he believed to be a 15-year-old girl, authorities reported.
According to Wilmington Police, officers responded around 7:30 p.m. to the Mar Theatre after reports that Matthew Naughton, an adult male, reportedly intended to meet a minor. Instead, he encountered members of the Facebook group “Predator Proof,” who had been operating a decoy account on a dating app.
Officers detained Naughton on-site and transported him to the Wilmington Police Department. Following an investigation, he was taken to the Will County Adult Detention Facility. Naughton faces charges of solicitation to meet a minor, a Class 4 felony, and traveling to meet a minor, a Class 3 felony.
Police expressed appreciation for “Predator Proof” in assisting with evidence.
