Wichita, Kansas – Severe storms are expected to sweep across eastern and central Kansas this afternoon, bringing 65 mph wind gusts, quarter-sized hail, and the risk of flash flooding between 1 p.m. and 11 p.m. Tuesday. Cities along the Kansas Turnpike, including Wichita, Emporia, and Topeka, are most at risk as multiple storm rounds push through the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, storms will develop through the afternoon and intensify by evening. Areas in the “Slight Risk” zone—covering southeast Kansas and parts of northeast Oklahoma—should prepare for localized flooding and hazardous travel conditions, especially on I-35 and US-54. Rainfall totals east of the Turnpike may exceed 2.5 inches by Wednesday morning.
Wichita could see up to 1.5 inches of rain, with localized flooding possible during rush hour. Winfield, Eureka, and Coffeyville are also in the bullseye for high-impact rainfall and damaging winds. Residents should secure loose outdoor items and be ready to move indoors quickly if storms approach.
The threat is expected to subside early Wednesday, but rain chances return Thursday and linger through the weekend. More alerts may be issued if storm development intensifies tonight.
