Wichita, Kansas – Hotter weather is on the way for central, south-central and southeast Kansas as a prolonged stretch of summer heat builds into early next week. While a few isolated thunderstorms are possible today, most communities will remain dry before temperatures climb into the upper 90s and lower 100s by Monday and Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, isolated afternoon thunderstorms may develop across the region today, but widespread rainfall is not expected. High temperatures will range from 90 to 94 degrees, with heat index values between 95 and 100 degrees.
The heat intensifies beginning Sunday, with highs reaching 90 to 95 degrees, before many locations climb to 97 to 102 degrees Monday and 96 to 102 degrees Tuesday. Combined with increasing humidity, heat index values could reach 110 degrees on both Monday and Tuesday, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
Communities including Wichita, Hutchinson, Salina, Newton, El Dorado, Winfield, Arkansas City, Emporia and Chanute should prepare for several days of intense heat. Outdoor workers, athletes, older adults and anyone without reliable air conditioning will face the highest risk of heat-related illness.
Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activities during the afternoon, wear lightweight clothing and check on vulnerable neighbors and family members. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
