Jackson, Mississippi – Dangerous heat and humidity will continue across central Mississippi through next week, with the most oppressive conditions expected on Tuesday and Wednesday as heat index values climb as high as 112 degrees. The prolonged stretch of extreme heat will increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, particularly for people spending extended time outdoors.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, high levels of heat and humidity will create dangerous heat stress conditions across much of the state through next week. Afternoon heat index values are forecast to remain above 105 degrees each day, with many locations reaching 110 to 113 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday, making those the hottest days of the period.

Communities including Jackson, Vicksburg, Hattiesburg, Meridian, Natchez, Greenwood, Greenville, Brookhaven, Starkville and Winona are expected to experience prolonged periods of dangerous heat. Forecast heat index values peak around 112 degrees in Jackson, 113 degrees in Hattiesburg, and 111 to 112 degrees in several other communities by the middle of the week.

Residents should limit outdoor activities during the afternoon, drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings. Outdoor workers should schedule regular rest periods, and neighbors should check on older adults, young children and anyone without reliable cooling. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.

The dangerous heat is expected to persist through much of next week before gradually easing later in the week. Continue monitoring updates from the National Weather Service, as Heat Advisories or Extreme Heat Warnings may be issued as conditions intensify.
