Memphis, Tennessee – Dangerous heat and intense humidity have returned to the Mid-South, with heat index values climbing as high as 108 to 109 degrees this weekend and increasing even further through early next week. The prolonged stretch of oppressive conditions will significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for anyone without access to reliable cooling.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, afternoon temperatures will remain in the mid-90s through Tuesday, while humidity pushes feels-like temperatures into the 105 to 108-degree range this weekend. By Monday and Tuesday, several communities could see heat index values between 109 and 112 degrees, likely prompting additional heat-related alerts across the region.

The dangerous heat will impact communities across west Tennessee, eastern Arkansas, north Mississippi and the Missouri Bootheel, including Memphis, Jackson, Dyersburg, Union City, Jonesboro, Forrest City, Kennett, Clarksdale, Oxford, Corinth and Tupelo. Warm overnight temperatures will provide little relief, allowing heat stress to build over several consecutive days.

Residents should drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon, wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings. Check on older adults, young children and neighbors without adequate cooling, and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.

The hot pattern is expected to continue through Tuesday before some relief arrives by midweek, when temperatures and humidity are forecast to ease. Continue monitoring updates from the National Weather Service, as additional Heat Advisories or Extreme Heat Warnings may be issued.
