Wichita, Kansas – A winter storm is expected to bring heavy snow and dangerously cold wind chills across south-central Kansas through early Monday, creating hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, snow is expected to begin Friday evening, spreading across the region overnight. Snowfall is forecast to continue through Sunday morning, with a brief lull possible during the day Saturday before heavier snow redevelops Saturday night.

Forecast totals range from 6 to 10 inches across much of south-central Kansas, with higher amounts of 8 to 12 inches possible in southeastern areas, including Chanute, Winfield, and Coffeyville. Probabilities for at least 8 inches of snow exceed 60 percent in parts of southeast Kansas.

The National Weather Service warns that travel is highly discouraged from Friday night through Sunday morning due to snow-covered roads and reduced visibility. Officials note that moderate disruptions to daily life are likely, including potential closures and infrastructure impacts.

In addition to snow, Arctic air will bring dangerous wind chills through Monday morning. Wind chill values between -10 and -20 degrees are expected across much of the region, increasing the risk of frostbite with prolonged outdoor exposure.

Snow is expected to taper off from west to east early Sunday, while bitterly cold conditions persist into early next week.

Residents are urged to complete travel and preparations before conditions deteriorate, limit time outdoors during extreme cold, and monitor updated forecasts from the National Weather Service as the storm evolves.
