Grand Rapids, MI – A winter weather advisory remains active across west and southwest Michigan, with heavy lake effect snow expected through Tuesday. Snow accumulations could reach 6 inches in some areas by Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, the advisory covers cities including Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Holland. Snowfall is forecast to intensify after midnight, with hazardous road conditions likely during Tuesday’s morning and evening commutes. Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing, further complicating travel.
The advisory will remain in effect until 1 a.m. Wednesday. Visibility may drop significantly during snowfall, with conditions varying across short distances due to localized bands of heavy snow. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously and prepare for sudden changes in road conditions.
Lake effect snow is expected to be heaviest in areas west and southwest of Grand Rapids. The National Weather Service warns that visibility could drop rapidly within snow bands. Areas outside of the snow bands may experience lighter precipitation or dry weather.
Travelers should plan ahead for potentially dangerous driving conditions, especially on secondary and rural roads. Authorities recommend reducing speed, increasing following distances, and keeping emergency kits on hand in case of unexpected delays.
With temperatures hovering in the mid-20s Fahrenheit, the snow is expected to accumulate quickly, particularly during peak precipitation periods on Tuesday.
The winter weather advisory highlights the unpredictable nature of lake effect snow, urging residents to stay informed about conditions and exercise caution when traveling.
