Grand Junction, Colorado – Snow-covered mountain roads and widespread showers are making travel hazardous across Western Colorado today, with up to 10 inches of fresh snow possible in the San Juans by Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. Sunday through 6 a.m. Monday for elevations above 9,500 feet. Scattered morning showers will become more widespread by midday, with embedded thunderstorms and gusty winds persisting into the evening. Highs will run 10 to 15 degrees below normal for mid-May.
Travel over high mountain passes—including Red Mountain, Lizard Head, and Wolf Creek—will be difficult tonight as icy and snow-packed conditions develop. Motorists should avoid non-essential travel, use caution on slick roads, and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility and traction.
Cities like Durango, Telluride, and Gunnison may also experience heavy rain and isolated storms, while lower elevations face localized flooding risks. This marks the largest late-season snowfall event since May 2021 in parts of the San Juan Mountains.
The advisory remains active through early Monday, and additional alerts may follow if conditions worsen.
