Charleston, West Virginia – Residents across West Virginia have a few more days of comfortable summer weather before a wetter pattern returns this weekend. Dry conditions will continue through Friday and into Saturday morning, but a developing storm system is expected to bring showers, thunderstorms, and the potential for heavy rainfall beginning Saturday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, today will be mostly sunny, dry, and pleasant across the Mountain State. Afternoon highs will reach the mid-60s to 70s in the mountains and 70s to lower 80s across the lowlands, providing excellent conditions for travel and outdoor activities.
Friday stays dry with partly to mostly sunny skies and warmer temperatures. Highs will climb into the 70s to lower 80s in the mountains and the lower to upper 80s in the lowlands, including Charleston, Huntington, Parkersburg, Beckley, and Morgantown. Travel along Interstates 64, 77, and 79 is expected to remain free of weather-related impacts through the day.
A significant change arrives Saturday as showers and thunderstorms spread from west to east during the afternoon. High temperatures will range from the 70s to lower 80s in the mountains and the upper 70s to middle 80s across the lowlands. The National Weather Service says heavy rainfall is possible Saturday afternoon and Saturday night, raising the threat of localized flash flooding, especially in flood-prone and poor-drainage areas.
Showers and thunderstorms continue Sunday before rain chances become more scattered Monday afternoon.
Residents should take advantage of the dry weather through Friday to complete outdoor projects and remain alert for changing conditions this weekend. Never drive through flooded roadways, and monitor updated forecasts as additional flood watches or advisories may be issued.
