Charleston, WV – Extreme heat will grip much of West Virginia through midweek, with heat index values soaring past 110 degrees in lowland areas from Sunday afternoon through Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, Excessive Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories are now in effect across most of the state, including the Kanawha, Ohio, and Coal River valleys. Afternoon highs will range from the mid to upper 90s, while overnight lows in the 70s will offer little relief, especially in urban areas.

The most intense heat is expected in Charleston, Huntington, Parkersburg, and other lowland cities, where the heat index could remain in the triple digits for several consecutive days. Mountain areas, including Elkins and Beckley, will see slightly cooler temperatures in the 80s and low 90s, but conditions will still be oppressive.

Residents are urged to avoid strenuous outdoor activities, stay hydrated, check on elderly neighbors, and never leave children or pets in vehicles. Cooling shelters may open if conditions worsen.

While the heat remains dominant, isolated showers and thunderstorms may develop by Wednesday, offering potential relief. Heat alerts remain in effect through at least Wednesday evening, with updates expected daily.
