Bangor, Maine – Heavy rain and thunderstorms could wake Mainers early Sunday morning, with a scorching heat wave trailing close behind to start the workweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, scattered storms are expected to cross the state late tonight into Sunday morning, bringing 0.25 to 0.8 inches of rain across much of northern and central Maine. Localized downpours may cause ponding on roads, particularly in low-lying areas between Millinocket and Houlton.
Temperatures will skyrocket starting Monday, with heat indices pushing into the upper 80s and low 90s. By Tuesday, interior southern towns like Bangor, Lewiston, and Dover-Foxcroft could see “feels-like” temps approaching 100°F. The NWS warns that this stretch of heat could be dangerous, especially for vulnerable populations without access to air conditioning.
Cities like Presque Isle and Caribou will stay slightly cooler but still reach into the upper 80s by Tuesday afternoon. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor labor during peak hours, and check on elderly neighbors.
Relief arrives midweek as a cold front pushes across Maine late Tuesday, bringing cooler, drier air for Wednesday.
