Charleston, WV – West Virginia residents should prepare for snow showers and strong winds starting late Wednesday and continuing into Thursday morning. Lower elevations may see minor accumulations, while higher mountain regions are forecast to receive up to 5 inches of snow.

According to the National Weather Service Charleston office, rain will transition to snow late Wednesday afternoon as temperatures drop sharply. Snowfall is expected to intensify Wednesday night, especially in central and northern mountain areas, including regions along I-77 and I-79. Gusty winds could further reduce visibility and create hazardous driving conditions, particularly for commuters and truckers traveling through the area.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor items and plan for slower travel times. Temperatures will plummet into the low 20s overnight, with wind chills making it feel even colder. The snow is expected to taper off by Thursday morning, but isolated snow showers may persist in higher elevations.

Looking ahead, Thursday will bring mostly sunny skies but frigid conditions, with highs in the mid-30s. By Friday, milder weather will return, with sunny skies and highs near 46°F. However, rain chances increase again by Saturday afternoon, signaling the next round of unsettled weather.

Drivers are encouraged to check local road conditions before heading out and to carry emergency supplies if traveling through mountainous areas. The West Virginia Department of Transportation is preparing crews to treat icy roads.
