Memphis, Tennessee –Damaging winds and large hail could impact parts of West Tennessee through 9 p.m. Thursday as a cold front sweeps across the region, triggering isolated severe thunderstorms.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, storms are expected to develop between 3 and 9 p.m., with gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to the size of quarters. While tornadoes are not anticipated today, forecasters warn that all modes of severe weather could emerge on Friday as storm activity becomes more widespread.

Areas at risk tonight include Memphis, Jackson, Covington, and Dyersburg, where strong wind gusts may down tree limbs and damage power lines. Travel may be hazardous on I-40 and US-51 during peak commute hours, especially where brief heavy downpours reduce visibility.

Residents are urged to charge devices, secure outdoor items, and have multiple ways to receive warnings, including NOAA Weather Radio or local TV and radio alerts. Storms are expected to be short-lived but could intensify quickly with little warning.

The threat will increase across western and central Tennessee again on Friday. Watches or additional warnings may be issued overnight. Stay weather-aware through the end of the week.
