Washington–Oregon Homes Face Grocery Hikes After Spain Imports Suspended

Families across Washington–Oregon may want to take a closer look at their grocery receipts.

On Tuesday morning, the United States announced it is suspending imports from Spain due to the country’s role in the escalating Iran conflict. While it may sound like overseas political news, it could soon affect prices inside your home kitchen in Seattle, Portland, Spokane, Eugene, and communities across the Pacific Northwest.

Spain exports a variety of food products to the United States. When imports are suspended, supply tightens. When supply tightens, prices often rise — especially on imported cooking staples.

The biggest product to watch in Washington–Oregon homes is olive oil.

Spain is the largest olive oil producer in the world. Many olive oil brands sold across the Pacific Northwest rely partly or fully on Spanish supply — even bottles labeled as blends from several countries. If shipments slow or stop, grocery stores and warehouse clubs may adjust prices quickly as wholesale costs increase.

Other common pantry staples could also see price hikes. Spanish olives used in pasta dishes and salads, anchovies for dressings and sauces, smoked paprika for seasoning meats, and manchego cheese for charcuterie boards are commonly imported. If you cook often — especially seafood or Mediterranean-style meals — you may notice price changes in the coming weeks.

Restaurants throughout Washington and Oregon could also feel the impact. Italian restaurants, seafood establishments, and tapas-style eateries rely heavily on olive oil and imported ingredients. Higher costs may lead to higher menu prices.

This is not a shortage situation. Grocery shelves will still offer alternatives. But when imports are cut off, prices often rise before new suppliers are secured.

Households in Washington–Oregon that rely on these products may want to review pantry supplies before costs move higher.
