Island County, WA – The Island County Sheriff’s Office is pushing back against misinformation surrounding an ongoing fire and explosion investigation, reminding the public that investigators cannot make arrests until sufficient evidence has been gathered.
According to the Island County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation remains active and is “far from complete” as detectives continue collecting information from numerous sources while awaiting the official cause-and-origin report from the initial fire and explosion.
The agency issued the statement Tuesday after online speculation suggested authorities should have already arrested someone connected to the incident.
Sheriff’s officials emphasized that investigators have a legal obligation to conduct a complete and lawful investigation before taking enforcement action.
“We must gather all necessary evidence and cannot ‘go arrest’ someone without a complete investigation,” the agency said in its statement.
The Sheriff’s Office also addressed reports that a former resident had returned to the property, prompting concerns from some community members that evidence could be altered or destroyed.
According to the agency, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Region 3 Arson Task Force have already completed their evidence collection and formally released the scene before the property was re-entered.
Officials acknowledged the community’s frustration over the pace of the investigation but said investigators must establish the facts before determining whether criminal charges are appropriate.
Authorities have not announced any arrests or identified any suspects.
The Sheriff’s Office said updates will be released as additional information becomes available and asked the public to allow investigators to complete the process before drawing conclusions.
