Blacksburg, VA – A winter weather system is expected to impact the region starting today, bringing snow showers and gusty winds through Saturday. Travelers along I-81 and in surrounding areas should prepare for slippery roads and limited visibility, especially during heavier snowfall periods tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, snow will develop this afternoon and continue intermittently into Saturday. Areas of southwest Virginia, including Blacksburg, are expected to see 1-4 inches of snowfall, with higher totals in upslope regions such as western Greenbrier County. The strongest winds, with gusts reaching up to 34 mph, are forecast Friday night, bringing wind chills into the teens.

Motorists are advised to use caution on untreated roads, especially during the heaviest snowfall expected tonight through Friday morning. Icy patches and reduced visibility could create hazardous driving conditions, particularly on major routes like I-81. Residents are urged to check weather updates and limit travel during peak snowfall hours.

The extended forecast shows partly sunny conditions Friday, with a high near 39°F. By Friday night, temperatures will dip to 32°F, keeping conditions ripe for icy roads. Saturday will bring continued cold with gusty winds and a high near 45°F, but conditions should gradually improve by Sunday, which is expected to be sunny with highs in the upper 50s.

Prepare for potential delays and ensure vehicles are winter-ready. Stay informed by monitoring local forecasts and road condition updates.
