Blacksburg, VA – A combination of gusty winds and dry air has heightened fire risks across eastern parts of the Blue Ridge today. Wind gusts are expected to reach up to 40 mph in higher elevations, posing potential challenges for travel and outdoor activities. Conditions are forecast to improve later tonight as rain moves into the region.
According to the National Weather Service, the fire danger stems from low humidity and dry soil conditions, which could allow flames to spread quickly. Residents are urged to avoid open flames or activities that could ignite fires. Winds are expected to subside this evening, with rainfall arriving after nightfall, offering some relief to the dry conditions.
Temperatures today will reach highs in the upper 50s to low 60s before cooling into the low 40s tonight. Rainfall, potentially heavy at times, will persist into Monday morning with up to half an inch expected.
Looking ahead, Tuesday brings another chance of rain, with highs near 56°F and calm winds. By midweek, colder air will push into the region, introducing a potential for snow showers on Wednesday night as temperatures drop into the low 20s.
Drivers along local roadways, including Interstate 81, should remain cautious during tonight’s rain and prepare for potential slick conditions later in the week.
