Richmond, VA – The Labor Day holiday concluded with a tragic toll on Virginia’s roads, as state police reported ten fatalities across eight crashes during the extended weekend. The fatal incidents, which took place from August 30 to September 2, 2024, included two double-fatality crashes in Northampton and Henry counties.
According to Virginia State Police Superintendent Colonel Gary T. Settle, this year’s death toll highlights an ongoing issue with traffic safety. “We continue to be on an unsustainable pace for traffic fatalities,” Settle stated, urging drivers to adhere to safety protocols, including slowing down, buckling up, and driving sober.
The crashes occurred in Bedford, Caroline, Floyd, Henrico, Henry, Montgomery, and Northampton counties, as well as the city of Lynchburg. The statewide Operation C.A.R.E. initiative saw Virginia State Police issue over 3,000 speeding citations and arrest 77 individuals for driving under the influence during the holiday period.
