Wakefield, VA – Residents and visitors along the Virginia coast should be on high alert as the rip current risk remains elevated through the weekend. The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued warnings for beachgoers, highlighting the potential dangers of swimming in these conditions. Rip currents, which are strong, narrow currents that flow from the shore out to sea, pose a significant threat, especially at unguarded beaches.
According to the National Weather Service, Friday’s weather will start mostly sunny with temperatures reaching the mid to upper 80s. Clouds are expected to increase by the afternoon. The warm weather is set to continue through the weekend, with Saturday’s high around 85°F and partly cloudy skies. On Sunday, a 50% chance of rain is forecasted, with temperatures slightly rising to 86°F.
The rip current risk is particularly high along the Assateague State Park and Ocean City beaches, where surf heights are expected to build up to 3 feet by Saturday. Beachgoers are advised to swim only in areas with lifeguards and to remain vigilant, avoiding the water if unsure of conditions.
Looking ahead to the upcoming week, temperatures will cool slightly. Monday will see a continuation of scattered showers with a high of 85°F, followed by a dip in temperatures on Tuesday, with a high of 78°F under partly sunny skies. By midweek, Wednesday’s forecast predicts a pleasant 80°F and mostly sunny conditions.
