Crystal Lake, IL – A 15-year-old electric bicycle rider remains in serious condition after colliding with a car Wednesday afternoon in unincorporated Crystal Lake, authorities said.
According to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, deputies joined Crystal Lake police and firefighters at Walkup Road and Dvorak Drive at about 1 p.m. following reports of a crash involving a car and an electric bicycle.
A preliminary investigation found that the teenager was riding a Super73 Class II electric bicycle westbound near Dvorak Drive while a 2017 Ford C-Max traveled north on Walkup Road.
For reasons still under investigation, the bicycle failed to yield to the Ford while crossing the roadway, and the two collided, the sheriff’s office said.
Emergency crews transported the teenager by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital. The child was later airlifted to Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and remained in serious condition Thursday.
Authorities did not publicly identify the teen because the rider is a juvenile.
The Ford’s driver, a 66-year-old Crystal Lake woman, was not injured. Investigators said she remained at the scene and was cooperating fully with the investigation.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision. Officials did not announce any citations or charges in Thursday’s update.
The crash occurred in an unincorporated area of McHenry County near Crystal Lake. Drivers, cyclists and electric bicycle riders using the intersection are urged to remain alert and yield as required while crossing or entering traffic.
