Virginia – Warm, dry air is fading fast across the mountains, and a band of showers with embedded storms is lining up to move through by early Sunday, bringing sudden wind gusts and wet roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Marginal Risk for severe weather is in place tonight into early Sunday, with a few storms capable of producing strong wind gusts and small hail. Rain chances climb to 70 percent late, then remain elevated into Sunday morning as a cold front sweeps through the region.

Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and Radford will see temperatures drop sharply from the mid-80s today to the upper 50s by Sunday afternoon. That quick change will be noticeable, especially with northwest winds increasing and gusting over 35 mph by Sunday afternoon. Drivers along I-81 and Route 460 should prepare for slick pavement and sudden crosswinds.

Rain tapers later Sunday, but cooler air settles in quickly. Skies clear Sunday night, sending temperatures down to the upper 30s. Some sheltered valleys could edge close to frost by early Monday, especially west of Montgomery County.

Monday turns sunny but cool, with highs near 55°F. The chill deepens Monday night as temperatures fall near 30°F, raising a more widespread frost risk across southwest Virginia and nearby North Carolina foothills.

By Tuesday and midweek, a steady warmup returns, with sunshine and highs climbing back into the upper 60s and 70s.
