Blacksburg, VA – A light rain system will move across Virginia starting Sunday night, but it won’t be enough to ease the ongoing dry conditions, prompting continued fire safety warnings across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, rainfall amounts will remain minimal—ranging from 0.01 to 0.25 inches—through Monday morning. The highest totals are expected along the North Carolina border and in far western counties, but even those will offer limited relief.
Much of central and southwestern Virginia, including Lynchburg, Roanoke, and Martinsville, will receive only trace amounts of rain. The NWS emphasized that these low totals will do little to impact the elevated fire danger caused by persistent dry weather.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, especially in areas under active burn bans or advisories. Fire officials warn that even small sparks could ignite fast-spreading fires under current conditions.
The Virginia Department of Forestry and local agencies continue to monitor fire weather conditions closely. Residents should check with local authorities for the latest on burn restrictions and follow all fire safety guidelines.
The light rain is expected to end by mid-morning Monday, with dry and breezy weather returning by Tuesday.
