Salt Lake City, Utah – A 3.9 magnitude earthquake struck just west-northwest of Independence early Thursday morning, shaking homes across northern Utah from Provo to Ogden around 12:11 a.m. local time.

According to the University of Utah Seismograph Stations, the quake originated at a depth of 11.3 kilometers and was widely felt along the Wasatch Front. Nearly 200 people submitted reports to the U.S. Geological Survey’s “Did You Feel It?” map by sunrise, describing light to moderate shaking but no immediate damage.

Residents in Salt Lake City, Orem, and Park City reported brief jolts that startled them awake. No road closures or utility disruptions were reported, but emergency officials advise checking gas lines and securing items that may have shifted. The quake was rated as intensity level IV on the USGS scale, indicating noticeable shaking indoors but unlikely to cause structural damage.

Minor aftershocks remain possible through the day, though none have been reported as of 8 a.m. Thursday. The last significant quake in the region was a 5.7 magnitude event near Magna in March 2020.

Seismologists continue to monitor the area, and residents are encouraged to review their earthquake preparedness plans. No further alerts have been issued, but updates will follow if activity increases.
