Columbus, OH – As temperatures continue to rise across Ohio heading into the summer season, state officials are emphasizing the importance of protecting pets from extreme heat-related dangers.

The Ohio Emergency Management Agency (EMA) has released a series of tips aimed at keeping animals safe during prolonged heatwaves. According to the EMA, pet owners should prioritize keeping pets indoors whenever possible, ensuring they have continuous access to fresh drinking water and shaded areas if left outside.

Extreme heat can pose significant risks to animals, particularly when left in confined or sun-exposed spaces. According to the agency, temperatures inside vehicles can rise nearly 20 degrees within just 10 minutes—even if windows are cracked. This creates a potentially fatal situation for pets left unattended in cars.

“Animals should never be left in parked vehicles, even for a few minutes,” the EMA warned in its preparedness bulletin. “Bring them inside or ensure they have shelter from the sun and access to plenty of water.”

Additionally, the EMA advises pet owners to pay close attention to signs of heat stress, such as excessive panting, lethargy, or vomiting. These symptoms may indicate heat exhaustion, which requires immediate intervention.

State officials also encourage residents to make arrangements for pets during power outages or if their homes lack air conditioning. They recommend visiting friends or family with cooling systems or seeking out pet-friendly cooling centers when necessary.

The full list of safety guidelines for pets, along with broader heat preparedness information, can be found on the Ohio EMA’s website. Residents are encouraged to check local forecasts and be aware of heat advisories throughout the season.
