Greenville, South Carolina – Residents across the Upstate of South Carolina and western North Carolina should prepare for multiple rounds of thunderstorms today and Thursday, with repeated heavy rainfall increasing the risk of localized flooding and a few storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, showers and thunderstorms will develop ahead of a slow-moving cold front, with storms expected to repeatedly move over some of the same locations through Thursday. That pattern raises the potential for heavy rainfall and isolated flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas, urban locations and places with poor drainage.
The flooding concern extends across much of the western Carolinas, including Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Gaffney, Clemson, Asheville, Hendersonville and surrounding mountain communities. Motorists should be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions and avoid driving through flooded roadways if heavy rain develops.
In addition to the flooding threat, a few thunderstorms could become severe this afternoon and evening. The National Weather Service says damaging wind gusts will be the primary hazard, although lightning and brief torrential downpours will accompany many of the stronger storms.
Residents should monitor weather alerts throughout the afternoon and evening, have multiple ways to receive warnings and be prepared to move indoors quickly if storms approach. Additional Flash Flood Warnings or Severe Thunderstorm Warnings may be issued as repeated rounds of rain continue through Thursday.
