Aberdeen, SD – A powerful winter storm is expected to bring blizzard conditions, snowfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour, and 60 mph wind gusts to the Upper Midwest this St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for parts of Minnesota, South Dakota, and North Dakota, including Aberdeen, Watertown, Sioux Falls, and Minneapolis. Snow accumulations could range from 1 to 8 inches, with locally higher amounts possible, while ice accumulations may reach up to two-tenths of an inch.

The storm will transition from rain to a wintry mix early Saturday morning before turning into heavy snow by midday. Strong northwest winds up to 60 mph will create whiteout conditions, making travel extremely dangerous across multiple states.

Authorities urge residents to prepare for the possibility of power outages and treacherous road conditions. If travel is necessary, drivers should carry emergency kits, including blankets, water, and other survival essentials.

The storm is expected to exit the region by Saturday evening, but lingering gusty winds and blowing snow could continue to impact roadways into Sunday. Travelers should monitor the latest forecasts and road conditions before heading out.
