Michigan’s Upper Peninsula feels locked in ice as bitter air cuts across Lake Superior.
In Marquette, the cold presses hard this morning, stinging exposed skin while light snow drifts through narrow lake-effect bands. Even short trips outside feel urgent.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect through mid-morning. Wind chills have plunged as low as 40 to 42 degrees below zero, with air temperatures hovering near 20 below. Frostbite can develop on exposed skin in 10 minutes or less.

Lake-effect snow continues in northwest wind snowbelts, especially along U.S. 41 and nearby county roads. Visibility may briefly drop to one-half mile in heavier bursts, creating sudden travel hazards. Snow totals remain modest, but the combination of cold pavement and blowing snow keeps roads slick.

Cold conditions persist into tonight and Sunday morning, with lows sinking back below zero and wind chills dipping into the 20 to 30 below range. Even as winds ease, the cold remains dangerous. Drivers should expect hard starts, drained batteries, and reduced tire pressure.

Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, wear layered clothing, and cover faces and hands fully. Keep pets indoors and check that heating systems and space heaters are operating safely. Allow faucets to drip slowly to reduce the risk of frozen pipes.

By Monday, temperatures recover only slightly, with highs near 10 degrees. Snow chances increase early next week as weak systems pass through, raising the risk of light accumulations and recurring slick spots. Flash freezing remains possible where brief melting occurs during daylight.

Longer-range outlooks point to cold air lingering across the Great Lakes, while drier weather develops midweek. Additional advisories may be issued if lake-effect bands intensify.
