Michigan’s winter tightens its grip across the north as the air bites hard this morning.
Breath turns sharp in Gaylord, where still skies and deep cold combine into dangerous conditions that feel unforgiving even for seasoned residents.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect through late morning. Air temperatures are running well below zero, while wind chills across interior northern Lower Michigan have dropped to 30 to 45 degrees below zero. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.

This level of cold stretches across Otsego County and much of northern Lower and eastern Upper Michigan. Even lakeshore communities are struggling to reach single digits. Gusty winds earlier worsened the chill, and although winds ease, the cold remains entrenched.

Isolated snow showers may drift through at times today and again Sunday night. Accumulations stay light, but slick patches can form quickly on untreated roads. Flash freezing becomes a concern where brief daytime melting refreezes after sunset, especially on secondary roads and bridges.

Travelers should limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and keep faces covered. Vehicles may struggle to start, and batteries can fail without warning. Check on neighbors, and ensure pets and livestock have warm shelter and unfrozen water.

Conditions slowly moderate early next week, but the cold does not release easily. Highs climb toward the teens by Tuesday, with additional chances for light snow. Nighttime lows remain near or below zero, keeping winter hazards in play.

Longer-range outlooks suggest cold air lingers across the Great Lakes while drier conditions settle in midweek. More advisories could follow if snow chances increase.
