Marquette, Michigan – Wildfire smoke continues to choke the air across Upper Michigan, and by Friday, the region may add thunderstorms to the mix.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, an Air Quality Alert remains in effect through Wednesday night, June 4, as fine particulate levels (PM2.5) remain high across the Upper Peninsula. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality warns that counties including Marquette, Keweenaw, and Delta could experience unhealthy air through at least Thursday morning. Visibility may also remain reduced due to lingering fog and smoke.
If you live near US-41 or in smoke-prone valleys, limit outdoor activity, especially for those with heart or lung conditions. Keep windows shut and run high-efficiency air filters (MERV-13+) if possible.
Thursday will start clear for most, with patchy fog and smoke early, followed by sunshine and a high near 68°F. By Friday, west and central Upper Michigan face a 40% chance of thunderstorms after noon. Thunderstorm chances continue into Friday night before clearing skies on Saturday.
Residents across Baraga, Iron, Gogebic, and Alger counties should prepare for rapidly changing travel conditions and remain alert to lightning and sudden downpours Friday afternoon.
More storms are possible early next week. Officials are not requesting weather spotters at this time, but updates may be issued if activity intensifies.
