Gaylord, Michigan – Smoke from Canadian wildfires will continue to choke parts of Northern Michigan and the eastern Upper Peninsula today, with limited relief expected before Wednesday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, hazardous smoke levels will impact visibility and air quality through this evening in Emmet, Alpena, Otsego, and surrounding counties. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity and monitor local air quality indexes. Light, isolated thunderstorms are possible near Saginaw Bay through this afternoon, though they are not expected to be severe.

The smoke has prompted air quality alerts across the region and may especially affect those with respiratory conditions, young children, and the elderly. Motorists along U.S. 131 and I-75 should anticipate low visibility and haze-related driving conditions. Keep windows closed and use recirculated air when driving.
