University of Illinois Reports Rise in Scooter and Bicycle Thefts

Urbana, IL – The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has reported an increase in stolen electric scooters across campus. Since the beginning of the semester, numerous scooters and bicycles have been taken, prompting a safety notice to the campus community.

According to the Division of Public Safety, many scooters were left unsecured, and thieves cut locks to steal others. The scooters targeted were stand-on types. Additionally, a significant number of bicycles have been reported missing.

Authorities urge students to secure their personal transportation and report suspicious activities. Crime prevention tips include locking all doors, keeping items out of sight, and bringing valuables with you. Thefts remain the most common crime on campus, officials noted.

Anyone with information can contact University of Illinois Police or Crime Stoppers at 217-373-8477. Anonymous tips can be submitted online or via the P3 mobile app. These tips are relayed to law enforcement after all identifying information is removed.
