Chicago, IL – A G3 (Strong) Geomagnetic Storm Watch has been issued by the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) from October 4 to October 6, 2024. The warning follows a pair of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that are expected to reach Earth over the next several days.

According to NOAA, CMEs are powerful bursts of solar material. When these reach Earth, they can cause geomagnetic storms, which may result in disruptions to technology and potential aurora sightings. NOAA expects limited effects on infrastructure, with minor impacts on power grids and satellite systems. However, the agency advises the public to stay informed as the storm could escalate depending on the magnetic field orientation of the ejections.

Residents of northern U.S. states may be treated to visible auroras during this period. NOAA suggests monitoring their website for updates as they track the storm’s developments.
