Birmingham, AL – Central Alabama is bracing for Tropical Storm Francine as it continues its approach from the Gulf of Mexico. Wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph are forecast to hit the area after midnight Wednesday into Thursday. These conditions are expected to cause downed trees and widespread power outages across the region.

According to the National Weather Service, brief tornadoes may develop on Thursday due to increasing instability. Rainfall totals between 2 to 3 inches are likely, with locally higher amounts of up to 4 inches possible. The risk of localized flooding will be heightened, particularly in urban areas with poor drainage.

Although Francine’s impact will be moderated by Alabama’s current drought, residents are urged to stay informed. Flooding remains a possibility, especially along the I-65 corridor, where the heaviest rain is forecast. The NWS advises residents to prepare for severe weather and remain alert for further updates.

Storm conditions are expected to last through Thursday, with potential for isolated damage and brief but strong tornadoes across the region.
