Trinity County, CA Earthquake: M2.6 Strikes Near Weaverville

Weaverville, CA – A small earthquake was recorded Tuesday afternoon in Northern California, with initial seismic data placing the magnitude 2.6 event northwest of Weaverville in Trinity County.

According to seismic event information shown by the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at 8:59 a.m. PDT Tuesday, Aug. 18, about 28 kilometers, or 17 miles, west-northwest of Weaverville.

The earthquake was recorded at coordinates 40.866 degrees north and 123.224 degrees west. Its estimated depth was 28.1 kilometers, or approximately 17.5 miles beneath the surface.

Initial information listed the earthquake with an automatic review status, meaning measurements could be updated as seismologists review additional data.

A magnitude 2.6 earthquake is considered minor and typically does not cause damage. Whether shaking is noticed can depend on several factors, including a person’s distance from the epicenter, local geology and the earthquake’s depth.

The event occurred in a mountainous section of Northern California west of Weaverville, the Trinity County seat. Weaverville is located west of Redding and roughly 200 miles north of the Sacramento metropolitan area.

At the time of the displayed seismic report, no responses had been submitted through the “Felt Report” feature indicating whether residents noticed shaking.
