Kankakee, IL – Three colleges serving communities in Illinois’ 40th Senate District are set to receive more than $202,000 in state funding aimed at strengthening literacy programs, workplace skills and educational opportunities.
According to State Sen. Patrick Joyce’s office, Kankakee Community College, Prairie State College and Joliet Junior College will receive a combined $202,443 through the latest round of funding administered by the Illinois Secretary of State.
“A lot of people still lack the academic skills to fully engage in work or community roles, but with smart investment we can change that,” Joyce said. “Our local community colleges have great literacy programs and this funding will help them continue their efforts to improve basic reading and writing skills for those who need help.”
The local awards are part of nearly $29 million in grants announced statewide by Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias on Aug. 13.
The broader funding package supports library services and literacy programs across Illinois. State officials said the money can be used to improve online library catalogs, help cover daily operations and expand programs allowing residents to borrow materials from other libraries.
Funding also supports radio information services for people who are unable to read standard printed materials.
Literacy grants are designed to improve basic reading, writing and math skills while supporting adult, family and workplace literacy programs. Some programs also provide English-language instruction to help participants improve skills needed for employment and community involvement.
Residents can find the complete statewide list of grant recipients through the Illinois Secretary of State’s website.
