Libertyville, IL – A community is rallying around the family of a 31-year-old mother of three who died after saving her 7-year-old son from the Des Plaines River Sunday evening at Independence Grove Forest Preserve in Libertyville.
According to the Lake County Forest Preserves, Angelina Khalimendik of Hinsdale entered the water near North Bay around 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, after her son got into trouble while swimming. Officials said she helped the boy reach a family member before going underwater herself.
Family members and bystanders pulled Khalimendik from the water. Paramedics transported her to Advocate Condell Medical Center, where she died.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office said preliminary information indicates Khalimendik likely drowned. Lake County Forest Preserves Police and the coroner’s office are investigating.
Khalimendik’s husband told reporters his wife was a passionate and devoted mother. He was away for work when the incident occurred and said he wanted her remembered for the care and dedication she showed their children.
Support for the family has grown rapidly following the tragedy. A GoFundMe established to help Khalimendik’s husband and three elementary-aged children had raised $26,993 toward a $30,000 goal through 259 donations as of Tuesday, reaching about 90% of its goal.
Organizers said the donations will help pay funeral and burial expenses and provide immediate financial support as the family adjusts to life without Khalimendik.
Officials are also warning visitors about dangerous conditions in the Des Plaines River following recent heavy rainfall. Lake County Forest Preserves Police Chief Ronald Davis said high water can contain submerged trees, branches, rocks and other debris.
Authorities are urging people to stay out of the water as the investigation continues.
