Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – A bus carrying members of the Coritiba Crocodiles, an American football team from Curitiba, overturned on a highway south of Rio de Janeiro on Saturday. The crash claimed the lives of three players and left at least six others injured.
According to local authorities, the bus was en route to a national championship match when it flipped on a rural road. The accident caused the match to be canceled. Photos from the scene show the bus lying on its side, blocking part of the road.
The Coritiba Crocodiles, a well-known American football team in Brazil, expressed their grief in a statement. “Our hearts are heavy with grief, and we ask for prayers and positive energy,” the team said.
The injured passengers were transported to a nearby hospital. Local authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, but no further details have been provided at this time.
