Corpus Christi, Texas – Flooding continues along portions of the Frio and Nueces rivers in South Texas, although some locations are beginning to see slowly improving conditions. While water levels are gradually falling upstream, major flooding remains ongoing in parts of the river system, and downstream communities will continue to experience elevated water through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi, the Frio River at Tilden has crested just below 30 feet and is expected to continue a gradual decline over the next several days. Forecasts indicate the river should fall below major flood stage early Friday and drop below flood stage later this weekend, although flood impacts will persist until water levels recede further.
Along the Nueces River at Cotulla, the river has also crested and is slowly falling. However, it is expected to remain in major flood stage through the weekend, with floodwaters continuing to affect nearby low-lying areas and river access points.
Farther downstream at Tilden, the situation remains more concerning. The National Weather Service expects the Nueces River to begin rising, reaching flood stage early Saturday before climbing into major flood stage Saturday afternoon as the flood wave moves downstream.
Residents near the Frio and Nueces rivers should continue to avoid flooded roads, river crossings and parks near the water. Even as river levels begin to fall upstream, swift currents and lingering floodwaters remain dangerous.
The National Weather Service will continue monitoring river conditions closely. Flood Warnings remain in effect, and additional forecast updates will be issued as water levels change through the weekend.
