Knoxville, TN – A fatal single-car crash late Thursday night on I-40 East has left a 26-year-old man dead, prompting an ongoing investigation by Knoxville Police. The incident occurred around 11:40 p.m. between Midway Road and Strawberry Plains Pike, where the car reportedly rolled over after possibly crossing the median from the westbound lanes.
Upon arrival, officers found the driver had been ejected from the vehicle and struck by a tractor-trailer that had already left the scene. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. A passenger in the vehicle, also an adult male, was taken to a local hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
According to the Knoxville Police Department, their fatal accident investigators are leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The eastbound lanes of I-40 were temporarily closed as crews cleared the scene, and the investigation is expected to continue into the coming days.
