Sioux Falls, SD – Thunderstorms have developed over west-central South Dakota and are expected to progress eastward, bringing the potential for severe weather across the region tonight.

According to the US National Weather Service Sioux Falls South Dakota, the strongest storms and heaviest rainfall are anticipated along and south of Highway 18. Areas of northeastern Nebraska and northwestern Iowa could see 1-2 inches of rain by 7 a.m. Wednesday. While the chance for strong storms diminishes as you move north, some stronger storms may still produce briefly heavy downpours, frequent lightning, hail, and damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph. Flash flooding is also possible under stronger storms, particularly in areas that are already saturated.

Residents are urged to stay weather-aware and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings. The heaviest accumulation is expected late this evening, especially over northwestern Iowa. Showers and thunderstorms will move into the region tonight after 7 p.m. and be east of the area after midnight. Some storms could be strong to severe, making it crucial for residents to know where to seek shelter if needed.
