Duluth, MN – Residents in the Duluth area are bracing for frigid temperatures and light snow showers as the first week of January continues. Subzero wind chills and gusty northwest winds will dominate the forecast, creating hazardous travel conditions through midweek.

According to the National Weather Service, Sunday’s high will reach 13°F with sunny skies, but strong northwest winds will make it feel much colder. Overnight temperatures are expected to plummet to 2°F, with gusts up to 20 mph making conditions especially biting.

On Monday, temperatures will slightly improve, peaking at 17°F under mostly sunny skies. Northwest winds will persist, diminishing slightly by evening as clouds increase overnight. Light lake-effect snow could develop in northern Iron County by Monday night, potentially causing slick spots on Highway 61 and other major routes.

Tuesday will bring partly sunny skies and highs near 18°F. While snow showers will remain limited, gusty conditions will keep wind chills in the single digits.

Looking ahead, the region will see a brief respite on Wednesday as winds ease and temperatures climb to 15°F, though Thursday may bring warmer conditions with highs in the mid-20s.

Drivers should remain cautious, particularly in open areas where drifting snow and icy patches are possible. Keep vehicles stocked with emergency supplies and check local forecasts before traveling.
