Arlington Heights, IL – Thanksgiving is the leading day for home cooking fires, and local officials are urging caution this holiday.
The Arlington Heights Fire Department reports that unattended cooking remains the top cause of kitchen fires. Residents are encouraged to remain in the kitchen while cooking and keep pan lids nearby to smother flames in case of fire. Officials also recommend turning off the burner whenever leaving the stove.
Other precautions include rolling up sleeves, keeping flammable items away from heat, and supervising children and pets. Firefighters also caution against using turkey fryers, citing burn risks from hot oil. Outdoor turkey fryers should only be used on stable surfaces, far from flammable materials.
Meanwhile, the police department will increase patrols for drunk driving during the holiday. Residents are reminded to arrange sober rides and wear seat belts.
Free smoke alarms and installation services are available through the Fire Department for those in need. To learn more about cooking safety and preventing fires, visit the Arlington Heights website.
