Austin, TX – A significant winter storm is expected to bring snow, sleet, and icy conditions to Central Texas starting Monday night. Areas along and north of I-10 and I-35 are under a Winter Storm Watch, with travel disruptions likely through Tuesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, snow and sleet accumulations could reach 2-3 inches near Austin and La Grange. Ice accumulation of up to 0.1 inches is also forecast, particularly south of I-10. Residents are urged to delay non-essential travel as roads may become hazardous.
A cold weather advisory remains in effect through Tuesday, with wind chills plunging to 7-15°F across the region. These temperatures pose risks for frostbite and hypothermia with prolonged exposure. Officials recommend bringing pets indoors, protecting pipes, and ensuring outdoor animals have adequate shelter and water.
Monday night will see increasing clouds, with snow and sleet likely after midnight as temperatures drop to 27°F. Tuesday morning brings continued icy conditions before clearing in the afternoon, with highs near 35°F.
Looking ahead, conditions improve midweek, with sunshine and highs in the 40s by Wednesday and the 50s by Thursday.
Travelers are advised to monitor updates from the Texas Department of Transportation and use extreme caution on I-10 and I-35, where road conditions may deteriorate rapidly. For safety, avoid overnight travel and dress warmly when outdoors.
Stay tuned for additional updates as the storm progresses.
