Austin, Texas – Tropical Storm Bertha is expected to move inland across Texas today, bringing a corridor of heavy rainfall capable of producing localized flash flooding across parts of central Texas. While widespread flooding is not anticipated, intense downpours could quickly overwhelm low-lying and poor drainage areas.
According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center, a relatively narrow swath of 2 to 4 inches of rain is forecast across portions of central Texas, with locally higher amounts possible as Bertha makes landfall Thursday afternoon. The heaviest rainfall is expected to fall within bands near and north of the storm’s track, where repeated downpours could rapidly increase runoff.
Forecasters say dry conditions leading up to the event should help reduce the overall flood threat. However, rainfall rates could still be high enough to produce isolated flash flooding, especially in urban areas, locations with poor drainage and along smaller creeks and streams.
Motorists should be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions during heavier rain. Water can rise quickly over roadways, making travel hazardous. Emergency officials continue to stress the message: Turn Around, Don’t Drown, as most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles attempting to cross flooded roads.
Residents across central Texas should closely monitor weather alerts throughout the day as Tropical Storm Bertha moves inland. Additional Flood Advisories or Flash Flood Warnings may be issued if heavier rain bands develop or persist over the same locations.
