Austin, Texas – A brief break from the recent heat will provide South-Central Texas with near-normal temperatures today, but residents should prepare for another extended stretch of hot and dry weather as triple-digit temperatures and dangerous heat indices return through next week.
According to the National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio, a few lingering showers will continue across the southwestern portion of the region Friday as the remnants of Tropical Storm Bertha move away. Elsewhere, partly cloudy skies will dominate with afternoon highs ranging from the upper 80s in parts of the Hill Country to the upper 90s across the Interstate 35 corridor. Highs include 95 degrees in Austin, 95 in San Antonio, 97 in San Marcos, 95 in New Braunfels, 96 in Georgetown, and 97 in La Grange.
The hotter pattern strengthens this weekend and continues into next week. Forecast highs climb to around 98 to 100 degrees in Austin by Sunday and Monday, 98 to 99 degrees in San Antonio, and 100 to 101 degrees in communities including Llano and New Braunfels. Maximum heat index values are expected to reach 104 to 106 degrees Saturday, increasing to 106 to 108 degrees in parts of the region by early next week.
Residents should stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the afternoon. Anyone working outside should take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and children and pets should never be left in parked vehicles.
The National Weather Service expects the hot, dry pattern to persist through much of next week, with additional Heat Advisories possible if temperatures and humidity trend higher.
