Austin, Texas – South Central Texas is entering a prolonged stretch of dangerous summer heat, with temperatures climbing into the upper 90s and lower 100s this week while heat index values approach 110 degrees across several communities heading into early August.
According to the National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio, sunny skies and seasonably hot conditions will continue today, with afternoon highs generally ranging from the mid-90s to near 100 degrees. Del Rio is expected to reach 99 degrees today, while Eagle Pass could hit 98 degrees, Austin 98 degrees, San Antonio 96 degrees, New Braunfels 96 degrees, Georgetown 98 degrees, Llano 99 degrees and Carrizo Springs 100 degrees.
The heat intensifies beginning Monday as a hot and dry weather pattern settles over the region. High temperatures are forecast to range from the upper 90s to 103 degrees through next weekend, with Austin expected to reach 103 degrees Thursday and Friday. Del Rio could climb to 103 degrees from Friday through Saturday, while Eagle Pass also approaches 102 to 103 degrees during the same period.
Afternoon heat index values will become even more dangerous, reaching 105 to 110 degrees in Austin, San Antonio, New Braunfels, Georgetown, Gonzales, Uvalde and surrounding communities. Warm overnight lows, generally in the upper 70s to lower 80s, will provide little relief from the daytime heat.
No measurable rainfall is expected over the next seven days, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses for anyone spending extended time outdoors. Residents should drink plenty of water, limit strenuous activity during the hottest part of the afternoon, wear lightweight clothing and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets.
The hot and dry pattern is expected to persist into next weekend, and additional heat advisories or other alerts could be issued if temperatures or heat index values trend even higher.
