Amarillo, Texas — Near-freezing temperatures will settle across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles early Saturday, with frost formation threatening vegetation and creating localized travel hazards between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, temperatures will drop to around 33 degrees during the pre-dawn hours, allowing frost to form quickly on exposed surfaces. The most concentrated impact is expected from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m., when calm winds and clear skies maximize surface cooling.
Cities including Amarillo, Dumas, Dalhart, Guymon and Canyon will see the greatest risk, especially in low-lying rural areas and valleys where colder air settles. Patchy frost may develop on bridges and overpasses along I-40 and U.S. 287, creating slick spots for early morning drivers. In agricultural zones near Hereford and Stratford, sensitive crops and garden plants face potential damage or loss if left uncovered.
This is part of a broader system of clear skies and light winds across the High Plains, allowing heat to escape rapidly overnight and temperatures to fall near freezing.
Residents should cover or bring in sensitive plants, avoid early irrigation that could freeze on surfaces and use caution on untreated roads during the morning commute.
The greatest risk for frost damage and slick travel conditions will occur between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m., when temperatures bottom out and surface freezing is most likely.
