Amarillo, Texas – Storms packing heavy rainfall and lightning are expected to move into the Texas Panhandle by 4 p.m. Wednesday, with flash flooding possible into the early morning hours Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, rain chances range from 50% near Pampa to over 90% around Dalhart and Dumas, with storm activity peaking between 6 p.m. and midnight. These storms may bring rain rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, especially in areas with higher moisture levels.

Communities including Amarillo, Vega, and Borger could see street flooding and hazardous driving conditions during the evening commute. While the chance for severe storms remains low, forecasters warn these thunderstorms could still produce damaging wind, frequent lightning, and localized flooding. Heavier downpours are expected with any strong storm cells.

Residents are urged to avoid low-lying roads, charge electronics, and monitor NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts for updates. Travel may become dangerous on I-40 and U.S. 287 during peak rainfall.

Storms are expected to taper off by 3 a.m. Thursday, but additional watches could be issued if moisture lingers into the morning hours.
