Amarillo, Texas – Heavy rainstorms are expected to trigger flash flooding across the Texas Panhandle Friday evening, putting Amarillo, Canyon, and surrounding communities at risk of waterlogged roads and dangerous travel through late tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a Flood Watch remains in effect from 5 p.m. Friday until 2 a.m. Saturday for Randall, Potter, Armstrong, Carson, Donley, Deaf Smith, Collingsworth, Oldham counties, and Palo Duro Canyon. Officials warn that excessive rainfall could quickly overwhelm rivers, creeks, and urban drainage systems, especially in areas hit by previous storms this week.
Communities including Amarillo, Hereford, Clarendon, Wellington, and Palo Duro Canyon State Park should prepare for flooded low-water crossings, poor drainage in city streets, and rapidly changing conditions after sunset. Emergency managers urge residents to avoid driving through flooded roads, charge mobile devices, and monitor alerts in case new Flood Warnings are issued. Campers and outdoor visitors at Palo Duro Canyon are especially urged to move to higher ground.
Rain and storms are likely to persist into the early morning hours Saturday. The Flood Watch may be extended if storms linger or more heavy rain develops overnight. Stay tuned to the latest advisories and have a safety plan ready as weather conditions evolve.
